For a fan base that had grown accustomed to watching the Lions emerge as legitimate contenders, the disappointment was enormous.
But despite the frustrating outcome, many analysts around the league believe Detroit’s situation is far less concerning than it may appear on the surface.
In fact, there is growing belief that the Lions remain one of the NFL’s most dangerous young teams — and if health finally cooperates, they could quickly return to the top of the NFC.
The biggest reason for optimism starts with the offense.
Even after a difficult season, Detroit still possesses one of the league’s most talented and balanced offensive cores. Quarterback Jared Goff continues to play some of the best football of his career and remains an ideal fit for the Lions’ offensive system. While critics spent years questioning whether Goff could truly lead a contender, he has repeatedly proven capable of operating an explosive offense when surrounded by the right pieces.
And Detroit still has plenty of those pieces.
Running back Jahmyr Gibbs has rapidly developed into one of the most electric young playmakers in football. His speed, vision, receiving ability, and explosiveness create constant problems for opposing defenses. Every time Gibbs touches the football, there is legitimate potential for a massive play. Many already view him as one of the foundational stars of Detroit’s future.
Meanwhile, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown remains the emotional heartbeat of the offense. Few receivers in the NFL combine toughness, consistency, and competitiveness the way St. Brown does. He has evolved into one of the league’s most reliable targets, capable of dominating games both underneath and down the field. His chemistry with Goff continues to be one of Detroit’s greatest offensive strengths.
Then there is Penei Sewell, widely considered one of the premier offensive tackles in football. Sewell’s dominance in both pass protection and run blocking gives Detroit a foundational piece every elite offense needs. His presence stabilizes the offensive line and allows the Lions to remain aggressive offensively against even the NFL’s toughest defenses.
That core alone gives Detroit a chance to compete with almost anyone.
But perhaps the most encouraging development for the Lions heading into the new season involves the defense.
Injuries devastated Detroit’s defensive unit throughout 2025. Key players missed significant time, chemistry suffered, and the inconsistency became impossible to overcome in critical moments. Many inside the organization believe the defense never truly had the opportunity to operate at full strength for extended stretches of the season.
Now, that could finally change.
The expected returns of Brian Branch, Kerby Joseph, and D.J. Reed could dramatically reshape the identity of Detroit’s secondary. Branch brings versatility, intelligence, and physicality that allow the defense to disguise coverages and create chaos around the line of scrimmage. Joseph continues developing into one of the more instinctive ball-hawking safeties in the league, while Reed provides veteran stability and proven coverage ability on the outside.
Suddenly, the Lions’ defensive backfield looks far deeper and more dangerous than it did during last season’s injury-plagued collapse.
Detroit also added fresh young talent through the draft, including promising prospects Blake Miller and Derrick Moore. The organization has focused heavily on building long-term depth and athleticism throughout the roster, understanding how important rotational strength becomes during a grueling NFL season. Those additions may not generate massive headlines immediately, but they could become important contributors sooner than many expect.
What makes Detroit especially intriguing is that the roster still feels relatively young compared to many contenders. The core players are either entering or currently in their prime years, meaning the championship window remains wide open if development continues.
Of course, staying healthy remains the biggest question.
The NFL can change dramatically depending on injuries, and Detroit learned that lesson the hard way last season. A talented roster means very little if key players cannot remain on the field consistently. But if the Lions finally experience better injury luck, many believe they have all the ingredients necessary to make another deep postseason push.
Head coach Dan Campbell also remains a major reason for confidence throughout the organization. Campbell has transformed the culture in Detroit, creating one of the league’s toughest and most resilient locker rooms. Even during disappointing stretches, players continue fighting for him, and that belief inside the building has not disappeared after one frustrating season.
Now the challenge becomes proving the Lions’ rise was never a temporary story.
After years of rebuilding, Detroit finally established itself as a legitimate contender before stumbling in 2025. But many around the league believe the setback may only fuel the next stage of the franchise’s evolution.
And if this young core stays healthy, focused, and hungry, it may not take long for the Lions to climb right back to the top of the NFC once again.
