Jazz Chisholm Jr. Sends Heartfelt Message While Yankees Wait for His Return

NEW YORK: Jazz Chisholm Jr. is currently away from the New York Yankees because of a right thumb sprain, but the second baseman found another way to stay connected with something bigger than the game.

On Tuesday, Chisholm and the Jazz Chisholm Foundation shared a message on Instagram after participating in Cantor Fitzgerald’s annual Charity Day. The event marked the 25th anniversary of September 11 and brought together people from across the financial and philanthropic communities to raise money for hundreds of charitable organizations.

For Chisholm, the moment arrived during a difficult stretch of his season. The Yankees infielder was placed on the 10 day injured list after injuring his right thumb during a headfirst slide into second base against the Colorado Rockies on September 8. Imaging confirmed the sprain, and manager Aaron Boone said Chisholm would be shut down from baseball activities for seven to 10 days before being reevaluated.

The injury came at an especially frustrating time for Chisholm. Before going on the injured list, he had begun to show signs of a better offensive stretch after struggling for much of the season. Through 134 games, he was hitting .232 with 19 home runs, 55 RBIs and 40 stolen bases. The 40 steals matched a career high and remained one of the most distinctive parts of his offensive profile.

His recent production had also offered some encouragement. According to the New York Post, Chisholm was hitting .295 with an .832 OPS over his previous 29 games before the thumb injury. That stretch had given the Yankees another reason to believe his impact could become more important as the regular season moved toward its conclusion.

Instead, Chisholm was forced to pause.

The Yankees responded by recalling Anthony Volpe from Triple A Scranton/Wilkes Barre. Volpe immediately returned to the lineup and produced a three hit, five RBI performance against Colorado, including a grand slam in a 10 to 3 victory. The performance gave New York an immediate offensive boost while Chisholm began his recovery.

But Volpe’s emergence does not erase Chisholm’s role on the roster.

Chisholm has become an important part of the Yankees because of his combination of speed, athleticism and power. His ability to change the game on the bases gives New York another dimension that cannot be completely replicated by simply replacing one position with another.

The timing of his injury is therefore significant. When Chisholm was placed on the injured list, the Yankees had 18 regular season games remaining and were still chasing the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East. MLB reported that Chisholm expected to target a return around the Yankees’ homestand beginning September 22, although the club’s seven to 10 day shutdown period meant his exact timetable remained dependent on his recovery.

That uncertainty makes his recent charitable appearance especially notable.

Rather than focusing publicly on frustration, Chisholm used the platform to remember those lost on September 11 and support charitable work. The message shared by Chisholm and his foundation thanked Cantor Fitzgerald and the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund for allowing them to participate in the event.

The Yankees are still navigating a crowded injury picture as September moves forward. Chisholm’s absence has coincided with other roster changes, while the organization continues preparing for the postseason. The team also recently reinstated pitcher Clarke Schmidt after a lengthy recovery from his second Tommy John surgery, another reminder of how much roster management matters at this stage of the year.

For Chisholm, however, the immediate objective is simpler.

Recover.

The Yankees do not need him to prove anything from the injured list. They need him healthy enough to return to baseball activities, regain his timing and determine whether his thumb can handle the demands of playing second base and running the bases.

His Instagram message did not provide a dramatic medical update or a firm promise about his return. Instead, it showed a player using an unwanted break from baseball to contribute somewhere else.

That may be the most meaningful part of the story.

Chisholm’s season has contained its share of challenges, but his latest message was not about statistics or the standings. It was about remembrance, charity and community.

And eventually, if his recovery progresses as hoped, the Yankees will be waiting for the baseball part of his story to resume.
